Job Title: Network Engineer

The Opportunity: A well-designed network is critical to move data and enable global organizations and users to achieve their mission, but how can an organization make sure their network will fit their evolving needs? Crafting the right network with the right equipment and software requires a combination of technical skill and careful planning. That's why we need you, a network engineer who knows how to craft the exact network that Navy needs.

As a Network Engineer on our team, you'll work with the Program Management Office to provide network architecture design and system operational support to other systems, establish requirements, develop and evaluate technical solutions and architecture designs, and perform solutions analyses. You will analyze the design of an enterprise migration and implementation plan for data centers, remote access connections, cross-domain solutions, network ports, protocols, and services configurations while meeting current network requirements. Additionally, you will provide Tier III network support while maintaining responsibility for analyzing and developing solutions for networking issues by monitoring all operational communications systems and circuits, direct troubleshooting, and restoring all actions for unscheduled outages.

You will analyze network activity and performance to identify potential network issues and inefficiencies, and develop and implement automated configuration management software solutions, including automated configuration management, software defined wide area networking, and Whitebox networking solutions for a reliable network to support global critical missions. You'll collaborate with SMEs in cybersecurity, engineering, quality assurance, and operations to learn the strategic goals and operational needs that shape the network requirements. You'll then share your expertise during the planning of acquisition, installation, configuration, and maintenance of the network components. From resolving interoperability issues across platforms to supporting the acquisition of hardware, you'll put your hardware and software talents to good use.

This is your chance to share your experience with enterprise network design and configuration, while broadening your network engineering work. Join us as we help our client provide a dedicated enterprise system for geographically separated units worldwide supporting critical national and global security missions. Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • Ability to travel to OCONUS locations up to 30% of the time
  • Secret clearance
  • HS diploma or GED
  • Security+ and Cisco Certified Network Certification such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) Certification

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience with Navy Enterprise Networks such as NMCI, NGEN, ONE-Net, or CANES
  • Experience with software defined networking

Frequently Asked Questions

In the Bladensburg area, certifications like Cisco CCNA, CompTIA Network+, and Juniper JNCIA tend to be highly valued by employers seeking network engineers. These credentials highlight proficiency in core network infrastructure, boosting your chances for roles at firms like Booz Allen Hamilton.

Bladensburg's proximity to D.C. creates a steady demand for network engineers, though competition is strong given the concentration of federal contractors and tech firms. Compared to Baltimore, Bladensburg offers more specialized roles tied to government projects, requiring niche infrastructure expertise.

Building expertise in routing protocols, firewall configuration, and network automation tools like Python scripting can accelerate career growth. Familiarity with cloud networking and security principles is increasingly critical for climbing from entry-level to senior network engineer roles.

Network Engineers generally focus on designing and optimizing network performance, while Network Infrastructure Engineers emphasize the physical setup, maintenance, and scalability of hardware components. Both roles require collaboration, but infrastructure engineers lean more toward hardware lifecycle management.

At Booz Allen Hamilton, network engineers often work on secure government communication systems, integrating advanced network security protocols and developing resilient infrastructure. Projects may involve designing scalable network architectures that comply with stringent federal security standards.

The company invests in continuous learning, offering access to certifications like CISSP, CCNP, and vendor-specific programs. This supports network engineers in staying current with evolving technologies and enhances their ability to tackle complex network challenges within federal environments.

Network Engineer salaries in Bladensburg typically range from $75,000 to $110,000 annually, with entry-level roles near the lower end and senior positions exceeding $110,000. Specialized skills in network security or federal contracting can further enhance compensation.

While Booz Allen Hamilton emphasizes onsite collaboration due to security needs, some hybrid options exist depending on project requirements. Remote flexibility varies, often influenced by clearance levels and the sensitivity of network infrastructure involved.

Federal contracting network engineer jobs prioritize security clearances, compliance with government regulations, and handling classified data. Conversely, private tech roles may offer more innovation freedom but less stringent security protocols.

Network engineers must navigate strict compliance standards, integrate legacy systems with modern tech, and maintain high uptime for mission-critical networks. Addressing cybersecurity threats while meeting government audit requirements presents ongoing operational hurdles.
